The DCP offers a variety of services to students, faculty and staff at
UCLA with temporary or permanent disabilities. Give us a call at
310-206-7133 for
any disability and technology related question. (Note: "staff" includes
teaching and research assistants.)
In partnership with the Office
for Students with Disabilities, the DCP will assess your technology needs and create a
custom strategy for the use of adaptive technologies that will maximize your productivity.
This includes:
evaluation of functional limitations, assessment
of tasks to be performed, and recommendation of appropriate technological strategies
training in the use of technologies such as
voice recognition, large screen software and displays, voice synthesis, Braille screen
displays, and printers
providing a loaner pool of equipment for
individuals to learn and evaluate such technology prior to making purchasing decisions
providing loaner equipment for people who have
temporary disabilities or who need the use of certain equipment on a short-term basis
The DCP works with OSD on several joint projects, including conversion
of course material into alternate formats. Requests are accepted from staff,
students, and faculty either for their own use or for the use of students in their
classes. Please contact Patrick Burke for a Brailling schedule.
Alternate formats include:
- Braille print
- computer files for voice output
- computer files for text output
- enlarged type
The Americans with Disabilities Act mandates that all campus facilities
be accessible to all students. DCP staff members can work with you to:
help design an accessible lab layout and floor
plan
make recommendations on furniture, including
adjustable height tables and appropriate seating accommodations
make recommendations on accessible hardware and
software
train lab and departmental staff on using
accessible hardware and software so they can work with students
help train students to use discipline-specific
software with adaptive tools
troubleshoot technical problems that occur when
adaptive software is used in a mainstream lab
Individuals with disabilities must have the same access to education
and information that every other person has. While the web has created tremendous
potential for access to information by individuals with disabilities, certain graphics,
tables and other web features make web pages unusable by some people with vision
impairments, learning disabilities and hearing impairments. To ensure that a web
site is usable by everyone, careful thought about accessibility issues is necessary. The
DCP will:
- track new access guidelines, mandates, and their implications, and make
the information available to the campus
inform campus web publishers of web
accessibility standards
provide detailed, written accessibility
evaluations on existing web sites
work with campus web publishers to correct
accessibility problems on their existing sites
work with campus web publishers who are creating
new web sites to ensure their accessibility is built in
provide suggestions on how to maximize the
accessibility of web sites while ensuring that the site meets all of your other
goals
Please contact Patrick
Burke with questions or to arrange for an accessibility evaluation.
DCP staff can help students, faculty and staff identify appropriate
equipment to best meet their needs and can make purchasing recommendations. The DCP will:
work with the ADA/504 Compliance Office to assist
departments in the purchase of adaptive computer equipment for faculty and staff through
the Reasonable Accommodation Fund
help individuals evaluate various types of
equipment and write letters to funding organizations recommending support for certain
purchases
